My Simple Skin Care Routine

Do you need a skin care routine? Have you ever had a skin care routine? Well let me share with you my easy skin care routine that I’ve started implementing after having my daughter.

My skin history

Growing up, I didn’t have super bad acne but enough to where some spots on my face would have the same pimples, blemishes and I would try to hide it some makeup and not treat it!

It started in middle school and then throughout high school, I would try to downsize the pimples with toothpaste, Isopropyl alcohol, or popping them! which are horrible choices..

Then I went to college and noticed I needed to start cleaning my face properly. Plus my skin was also getting noticeably better. ( I stopped eating junk food from high school!)

When I became pregnant and had my daughter, the middle of my forehead would get really dry but overall my skin texture was the same (combination oily). I started to look into creating a consistent routine to have for myself as self care.

Since I have “combination to oily skin” most of the oil I get is around my T-zone. Meaning my nose and forehead.

Products I use for my skin care routine:

  1. Facewash: Cerave Hydrating Cream to Foam Cleanser for normal to dry skin (also removes makeup)
  2. Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water
  3. Thayers Facial Toner Witch Hazel (unscented)
  4. Peter Thomas Roth Pumpkin Enzyme Mask
  5. Paula’s Choice Exfoliate 2% BHA Liquid
  6. Kiehls Ultra Facial Cream
  7. Clinique SPF 30 Sunscreen with Solar Smart

The Skin Care Process

Here is my process every day (morning and night.. I exclude #7 during the evening)

1. I wash my face with water and use the Cerave Hydrating Cream to Foam Cleanser. This also removes makeup! I believe this is a new product they released last year in 2020.

Optional: I use the Garnier Micellar Cleansing water sometimes if I don’t use the facial cleanser since this removes makeup too.

2. I wipe my face with a paper towel so I don’t place extra germs on my face from a towel that I use for my body.

3. I add the Thayers Facial Toner Witch Hazel with a cotton ball and I rub it all over my face and neck.

4. Once a week, I use the Peter Thomas Roth Pumpkin Enzye Mask. This mask feels so refreshing after you wipe it off, ahhhh feels so relaxing!

5. After I use the Thayers Toner, I apply Paula’s Choice Exfoliate.

I found this product on youtube as I was trying to see how I can update my skincare routine. I always had little bumps on my face even though my skin would be glowing, it would be annoying seeing those little bumps! So BHA is salicylic acid meaning it goes deep into the pores and prevents excess oil, acne, and dead skin cells. I’m sure there are other benefits, however, do your research! I did notice an improvement on my skin two days after using it once a day then every other day.

6. I allow the Paula’s Choice Exfoliate to sit for a minute and then I apply Kiehls Ultra Facial Cream. I may be biased but I LOVE this cream. It’s always kept my skin moisturized.

Another alternative is Argan Oil, I was using this right after I had my daughter for about two months because for some reason the middle of my face was super dry and the only thing that helped was Argan oil at the time.

7. Sunscreen: I use Clinique SPF 30 with Solar Smart and have used it for so many years. The way it blends with the other products on my face is a plus and doesn’t leave my face oily. It also doesn’t give a white cast.

So that is my skin care routine yall! I’ve always used a moisturizer for my face but I started  to implement more products to keep my face firm. Since I’m in my early thirties I’ve got to treat my face right!

Other Tips for skin care

I also wanted to share with you things I do on a daily to keep my skin the way it is.

  1. Drink PLENTY of water. I have a cup that measure the amount of water I drink per day. Sometimes I don’t make my goal but I regularly drink water. I don’t drink soda (unless mixed in an alcoholic drink) or caffeinated drinks.
  1. Limit your sugar intake.

3. Lessen the junk food!

4. Don’t pop your pimples with your hands and then retouch your face! Retouching your face with the bacteria on your hands will create more pimples. If you have to pop a pimple, clean the area with isopropyl alcohol or face wash of your choice. Also wash your hands!

5. Popping pimples could create scars! I still have scars on my nose from highschool and need to get them lasered off.

6. When buying expensive skin creams/serums, make sure you purchase or use their sample sizes! I bought a $60 face cream and it caused me to break out! I was sooo upset with that but I learned my lesson!

This is all of what works for me, I’m NOT a skin care expert, so if there are products you’ve tried on this list and it didn’t work for you then its ok! Everyone has different skin care needs/types and it really is trial and error.

I think if you’re not happy with your skin, you can start researching the topic. There are many ways to find things online to figure out ways to keep your skin healthy. Youtube has been amazing for me!

I need to add some serums and eye creams to this list but I’m still working on my routine! That’s the beauty of it, we discover things that could potentially be better for us!
