How to Spring Clean Your Home As A Busy Mom

It’s that time of year to spring clean your house and take control of the pile of junk taking up space.

But you’re a busy mom!

Remember that thing you were supposed to throw away in the closet which you said every week “I’ll get to it”… and a YEAR went by!

Yeah, it’s time to get rid of it now.

And I promise you, you’ll feel better when your home is organized, lighter, and have a fresh start in a clean house.

As a mom, I know what it’s like to have endless toys and clothes that pile up in the house, creating a visual and mental mess.

So I’ve created a system for How to spring clean your home as a busy mom. I got you!

Before you clean your house

Before you start cleaning your home, it can get overwhelming because there’s so much to do, throw away, donate, keep and the list goes on.

This is how I usually start cleaning before I get to deep cleaning below:

  • Use your phone or writing pad and take inventory of what needs to be cleared out for EACH room.
  • Go through the kitchen, bedrooms, living room, garage, etc., and take note of which items or sections need priority in cleaning first. You can use a number system (1- less priority, 2- High priority) Then you can organize it by which room you want to clean first.
  • Play music to mentally feel good and get in the mood!

I do this so I can get an overall feel of what needs to be cleaned or cleared out in each room so I’m not surprised and know what to look forward to in the next room.

You can also start by donating or throwing away items in each room before you start the spring cleaning process below. (this will make cleaning up quicker!)

Cleaning Products To Use

There are a million cleaning products out there to use and if you have some that you absolutely love then use it!

I’ve listed a few that I use in every section of my home and in this other cleaning schedule blog post.

There are links in my post where I can earn a small commission if you decide to purchase at no cost to you.

Kitchen Cleaning Products

To clean countertops in the kitchen, I use Mrs. Meyer’s All-Purpose Cleaner Spray Honeysuckle and the scent is amazing and leaves my kitchen smelling fresh. I use this every day!

The tangerine cleaning paste is perfect to get your sink clean and is a multi-purpose scrub to get stubborn dirt off any place.

For stainless steel appliances I use method stainless steel clean and polish and it gets all of the kids fingerprints and grim off.  I started using this product and LOVE it.

Washing the dishes has been easier using the scrub daddy sponges and I might just be a bit obsessed with them because it does get the hard parts off and they last a long time.

Entire Home Cleaning Products

To clean the living room floors, I like to use the Peony Multi-Surface Concentrate by Mrs Meyers Clean Day

Just add a bit of it with water in your mop bucket and it will leave your floors smelling fresh.

I dust my fans, table tops, dressers, etc. with the swiffer duster heavy duty and these are everything.

If you want something more reusable, you can try these fleece refills. These have been my go-to if you don’t want to keep paying for disposable ones.

Clean your windows with the Spray Way Glass cleaner. I am telling you… no, I am screaming it from the mountaintops that this spray is AMAZING. Just throw the other stuff away. I saw someone on Youtube use this spray and when I used it on my windows I was hooked!

This Vaccum has been my staple for cleaning up EVERYTHING in my house. From the floor to the blinds.

For upholstery cleaning try this steamer. I have a white couch and with two kids it always means stains and stickiness all the time. But having a steamer will solve that problem.

Bathroom Cleaning Products

To scrub your bathroom, start with a caddy. Using a caddy to carry around the house for your bathroom cleaning days will save you time!

Scrub your toilet with Clorox wipes so you can throw away the yucky germs.

I use Dawn dish detergent for the sink.

Yes, you’re probably thinking “Dish soap?!” yes I said the same thing, tried it, and it WORKS! You can use it for your shower too.

I also love  mrsmeyers lemon verbena tub and tile spray cleaner to scrub the tub. The bathroom is a place that always needs to be cleaned and reset.

Start Spring Cleaning of your home

Now it’s time to start cleaning your home, you have your products and now we can start the process! Whoo hoo!

Start cleaning your home with these tips below:

  1. At the beginning of this post, I mentioned going through every section of the house to see what you needed to clear out based on priority (Donate items, throw away items, etc).
  1. Start with the rooms that are easiest first and then the most difficult or cluttered.
  1. STAY in the room that you are cleaning. Don’t stray away in other rooms to clean, it will make your cleaning system more difficult and it will take longer.
  1. Once you’ve cleared the items, (donated, thrown away) organize any other things that need to be put back in their place. It doesn’t need to be perfect yet.
  1.  Dust the area first so that whatever is dirty can fall to the floor. You can clean the windows/mirrors too.
  1. I mop or vacuum the floor last so that everything I dusted is on the floor and can now finish it up.
  1. Ideally, you shouldn’t make Spring Cleaning a one-day thing! It’s a process that takes time so my idea is to break it down by doing one room per week or you can do one per day.

Being a mom requires a lot out of us so spring cleaning is something you might have to do in bite-sized tasks to get to the end goal.

Give yourself grace and a date to finish each room so you can see when everything will be finished.
